WBO super flyweight title
12 Rounds

Omar Narvaez 38(20)-1-2 vs. Felipe Orucuta 27(23)-1

By far, this is the best match-up Narvaez has had since his loss to Nonito Donaire back in October 2011.

Most global fight fans know Narvaez mostly from that stinker of a fight — in which it was pretty apparent that Narvaez flew to America simply collect a paycheque rather than win a fight.

What’s often forgotten about that fight is just how much Narvaez was able to neutralize Donaire’s offense. While Narvaez was unwilling to take any chances — and really, the size difference was just too much for Narvaez to do so — he demonstrated that Donaire had very real offensive flaws. It therefore wouldn’t surprise me if Guillermo Rigondeaux studied the Donaire-Narvaez tape.

But even if we ignored the Donaire fight, let’s look at Narvaez’ accomplishments. Not only is he the current WBO super flyweight titlist, he a former world titlist at flyweight too. In fact, he’s 23-1-1. You don’t run up that kind of record at the world level without being a legit talent.

At 37-years-old, Narvaez is still at it. He has recent wins over David Quijano, Johnny Garcia, Jose Cabrera, William Urina, and the previously undefeated Cesar Seda.

But like I said, this is Narvaez’ best fight on paper for quite awhile.

Since losing to Daniel Rosas, Orucuta has been on a 9 fight win streak with 8 of them coming by KO. Through this, he has banked victories over Fernando Lumacad, Julio Cesar Miranda, Devis Perez, Jesus Vazquez, and the previously undefeated Roberto Castaneda.

Orucuta has an 82% KO ratio, but he’s no mere banger. He’s a patient fighter who’s able to box too. Then, just when he sees the right moment, he puts his opponent to sleep. Orucuta is 10 years younger than Narvaez so he has youth on his side.

Does Narvaez have it in him for another convincing win over a hungry young lion?

Prediction: Narvaez by UD.
