Bethuel Ushona

WBO Africa Welterweight title
12 Rounds

Bethuel Ushona 30(8)-2-1 vs. Kaizer Mabuza 25(15)-9-3

Ushona keeps trying to bust out of the African continental scene.

His best win to date is against former IBF world titlist Isaac Hlatshwayo. He also has wins against Emmanuel Clottey, Peter Oluoch, Kames Kimori, and previously undefeated Gottlieb Shileka.

The problem is that whenever he leaves Africa he loses. When he left for Great Britain and Slovenia, Ushona lost to Denton Vassel and Jan Zaveck, respectively.  He needs to build a better resume if he’s ever to step up — and stay — on the world level.

This is why a fight against Kaizer Mabuza is excellent. Mabuza is a former IBO world titlist. He has wins against the likes of Isaac Hlatshwayo, Steven Wills, Kendall Holt, Samuel Malinga, and the previously undefeated Serhiy Fedchenko.

That said, Mabuza is still a tier 2 welterweight. He is 3-3 in his last 6 fights, and has lost recently to Zab Judah, Chris van Heerden, and Khabib Allakhverdiev.

The winner of this fight might have a shot at the world stage. The loser might be destined to stay in Africa for the rest of his career.
