Interim WBO light welterweight title
Mike Alvarado 34(23)-1 vs. Ruslan Provodnikov 22(15)-2
This is a surefire thriller between two sluggers who are all too willing to trade punches.
To boxing’s hardcore, Alvarado is a fan favourite. He’s been in war after war, all of which were Fight Of The Year candidates. The wins over Breidis Prescott and Mauricio Herrera were fun, but what’s most memorable were his two fights with Brandon Rios.
In the first fight, Alvarado lost by TKO7 after a toe-to-toe war. It had furious back and forth action, but ultimately Alvarado just ate too many shots.
The rematch lasted the distance and was won by Alvarado’s superior outboxing ability. Rios simply had no answer for Alvarado when he decided to keep his distance and shoot at range.
Now Alvarado is fighting an even bigger puncher than Rios.
Provodnikov is mostly known for his Fight Of The Year candidate against Timothy Bradley in which Provodnikov came ever so close to the KO. He lost by close margins but won many fans in the process.
Prior to that, Provodnikov was mostly known for his work on Friday Night Fights. During his time there he had wins against Emanuel Augustus, Jose Reynoso, David Torres, and the previously undefeated Ivan Popoca. He also had a close loss against Mauricio Herrera.
His alias is the “Siberian Rocky” — and Provodnikov does well fight as his namesake. He’s got no problem getting hit because he’s guaranteed to do more damage with his own shots.
Will Alvarado’s outboxing ability win the day over Provodnikov? Or will Provodnikov’s hard punches win the day?
Prediction: Alvarado by UD.
